Ajilore Defends Super Eagles Friendly Opponents

Former Super Eagles midfielder Femi Ajilore has defended the choice of opponents lined up for the national team during the next international window, insisting that there is nothing wrong with facing teams such as Jordan and Iran.

Ajilore’s comments come amid criticism from some former players and fans who believe the Nigeria Football Federation should have arranged stronger opponents for the Nigeria national football team following their recent performances on the continental stage.

However, the former midfielder believes the criticism is misplaced, stressing that there are no easy matches in modern football and that every game presents its own challenges.

“There are no small teams in football anymore,” Ajilore said.

He explained that the primary objective of international friendlies is not always about facing the biggest teams, but about giving the coaching crew an opportunity to assess the squad and test different tactical options.

“The most important thing is to use the window to test players and improve the team,” he noted.

According to Ajilore, the upcoming matches could provide valuable opportunities for new players to integrate into the squad and prove themselves at international level.

“It is a chance for the coach to introduce new players and see how they perform,” he added.

The former Super Eagles midfielder also warned Nigerians not to underestimate the quality of the scheduled opponents, pointing out that football has become increasingly competitive across all regions.

“Jordan and Iran are not teams that should be taken lightly,” he stressed.

Ajilore concluded by urging supporters to focus on the long-term development of the national team rather than criticising the selection of friendly opponents.

“What matters most is building a stronger team for the future,” he said.
