Young Nigerian tennis prospect Sulaiman Samad, fondly nicknamed “Ajegunle” by his peers, has identified national player Daniel Adeleye as his biggest inspiration as he continues his rise in the sport.
Speaking with Sports247Naija, Samad, who hails from Ajegunle, Lagos, revealed that his journey into tennis began in 2020 under humble circumstances.
While assisting his mother with her goods around the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, he was introduced to the sport by a coach who noticed his interest and potential. That encounter would spark a growing passion that has since shaped his ambitions.
“I think I am doing better with tennis, and trying harder can give me a chance to represent Nigeria in the future,” Samad said, expressing confidence in his development and long-term goals.
The young player was recently inspired further after witnessing Nigeria’s impressive outing in the Davis Cup World Group II Playoffs against Uzbekistan in Lagos. Nigeria’s doubles pair, Canice Abua and Michael Emmanuel, recorded a straight-sets victory over Denis Istomin and Khumoyun Sultanov (7–6, 6–4), while Daniel Adeleye capped the tie with a commanding 6–3, 6–4 win over Sultanov in the reverse singles.
“I’m motivated by the performances of our national players,” Samad added. “Seeing them compete at that level pushes me to work harder.”
Samad also encouraged young Nigerians to look beyond football and explore other sports, particularly tennis.
“Hard work can keep Nigeria’s hope alive in the Davis Cup,” he concluded. “I believe Daniel Adeleye and the others can continue to make us proud.”
