Aiyenugba Advises Calm as Nigeria Awaits FIFA Verdict on DR Congo Appeal

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba has advised Nigerians to remain calm and accept whatever outcome emerges from FIFA’s decision on Nigeria’s appeal against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), stressing that the national team must continue building regardless of the verdict.

Speaking amid growing anticipation over the ruling, Aiyenugba acknowledged the emotions surrounding the case but cautioned against placing the country’s football future entirely in the hands of a legal process.

“Whatever decision FIFA eventually takes, Nigerians should accept it in good faith,” Aiyenugba said. “Of course, it will be great if the verdict goes in our favour, but if it doesn’t, we must be mature enough to move on and focus on what lies ahead.”

The former goalkeeper explained that Nigeria’s current situation should serve as a lesson on the importance of consistency and seriousness throughout qualification campaigns, rather than relying on appeals after the fact.

“It’s always better to qualify on the pitch,” he added. “When you put yourself in a position where you need help from the boardroom, it shows that something went wrong earlier.”

Aiyenugba, however, praised the progress made by the Super Eagles under the current technical setup, insisting that the team now has a solid foundation to build on, irrespective of FIFA’s ruling.

“The positive thing is that the team already has a base,” he noted. “There is a clear structure, better understanding among the players and a defined playing identity. That is something Nigeria has not always had in recent years.”

He emphasized that continuity will be crucial for sustained improvement, urging football authorities to maintain stability around the team.

“If the verdict goes against us, it shouldn’t derail the process,” Aiyenugba said. “We should continue with the work already started, support the coach and players, and prepare properly for future competitions.”

The former international also called on fans to temper expectations and avoid unnecessary pressure on the players while the decision is pending.

“Speculation and anxiety won’t help anyone,” he concluded. “Let the process run its course, and whatever happens, Nigerian football must keep moving forward.”

As the football community awaits FIFA’s final word, Aiyenugba’s message is clear: progress, planning and patience must remain the priority beyond the verdict.
