“We were unable to attend the World Relays in China, which cost us automatic qualification. For instance, our men’s 4x100m team, which had previously qualified, lost their spot after Jamaica joined the list of 16 qualified nations,” Okowa explained.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s sprinters, including both home-based and elite foreign-based athletes, are determined to meet the qualifying standards. “Our 100m and 200m sprinters are working hard to hit the required times. We also have strong 400m athletes ready to fight for qualification. The athletes are in high spirits, and we believe they can bring Nigeria back into contention,” he added.
To bolster Nigeria’s chances, Okowa revealed that Ghana’s relay teams are in Lagos for a qualification meet, while another opportunity lies ahead at the CAA Region II Championships in Ghana from August 13–17.
“Our qualified athletes are also here competing to improve their personal and seasonal bests. We could witness record-breaking performances,” Okowa said.
Addressing perceptions that women have been leading Nigeria’s success in athletics, Tonobok Okowa expressed confidence in the men’s team. “I’ve seen the men’s 100m today, and I can assure you we have the talent to excel. Many of them have matured, excelled in the NCAA, and are now ready to represent Nigeria strongly.”
On the issue of funding, Tonobok Okowa acknowledged it remains a challenge but announced new sponsorship support.
“Arise News has joined as a sponsor, and Premium Trust Bank continues to support us. We need more sponsors to ensure athletes’ welfare.”
” Other countries are already enticing our top talents, like Favour Ofili, with big offers to change nationality. We must step up to keep our athletes representing Nigeria,” he concluded.
The 2025 National Trials enters day 2 today (Saturday ) as many events will be decided with the 100 meter men and women event final slated for 5 pm as the highlight of the day’s event of the day’s event.
