African School Games: Team Nigeria Wraps Up Badminton Event with Six Medals, Eyes Athletics Next

Team Nigeria wrapped up its campaign in the badminton event of the inaugural African School Games in Annaba, Algeria, clinching a total of six medals – two gold, three silver, and one bronze – in a remarkable display of youthful talent and determination.

Nigeria’s first gold medal came through Precious Oluwagbotemi Adekunle, who showcased exceptional skill and composure to defeat her Egyptian opponent in the girls’ singles final. Edun David Damilare followed up with another gold in the boys’ singles, securing a hard-fought victory with grit and tactical brilliance.

In the girls’ doubles final, the Adekunle sisters, Precious and Cynthia, fought valiantly but had to settle for silver, adding to Nigeria’s medal count. The mixed doubles event saw Edun David team up with Cynthia Adekunle to earn another silver for Team Nigeria.

The mixed team event featured Ahmed Ayatulla and Masibau Faisat, who battled Tunisia in a tense semifinal clash. Ayatulla won the boys’ singles 3-1, while Faisat lost 3-0 in the girls’ category. Tunisia narrowly edged Nigeria 3-1 in doubles, sealing a 2-1 aggregate win that left Nigeria with a bronze medal.

With this performance, Team Nigeria has now accumulated a total of eight medals across four sports at the African School Games – 2 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze.

The focus now shifts to athletics, which kicks off on Friday, August 1, as Team Nigeria aims to extend its medal haul in the track and field events.
