Team Nigeria continued its impressive outing at the ongoing African School Games in Algeria, bagging additional medals in taekwondo and athletics as the competition entered its second day.
The athletics events are set to intensify on Day 2 with seven finals scheduled. In the girls’ 100m final, Miracle Ezechukwu and Rosemary Nwankwo will fly Nigeria’s flag after posting the only sub-12-second times in the semifinals with 11.83s and 11.72s, respectively.

In the 100m hurdles final, Chinazor Rita Ekwaeme and Bernice Onoriode are strong medal contenders, while Jacinter Andrew will contest in the girls’ 400m final after qualifying with a time of 56.92s.
For the boys, Jesulayomi Ogundijo and Faye Perfect will compete in the 400m final following impressive semifinal performances. In the boys’ 100m, Akolo will be aiming for a podium finish after winning his semifinal heat in 10.93 seconds.
Away from the track, Nigeria’s taekwondo athletes opened their campaign with two bronze medals on Day 1. David Ibokette clinched bronze in the 55kg category, while Unique Umeh secured another in the 49kg category, both narrowly missing out on the finals after hard-fought semifinal losses to Algerian opponents.
In athletics, Team Nigeria also claimed two bronze medals on the opening day. Judith Ukandu earned bronze in the girls’ shot put, while Mohammed Jimoh took third place in the boys’ long jump.
With Day 2 action heating up, Team Nigeria will look to build on its early successes and increase its medal haul.
