African Armwrestling Championship 2026: Nigeria Wins Six Gold Medals, Reaches Eight Finals on Opening Day

Team Nigeria delivered a commanding performance on the opening day of the African Armwrestling Championship 2026 in Accra, clinching six gold medals and securing places in eight finals in the left-arm category, according to Sports247, which is on ground covering the event.

The strong start underlines Nigeria’s ambition to dominate the continental championship and secure qualification slots for the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt.

Across multiple weight divisions, Nigerian athletes showcased depth and consistency. In the Senior 100kg left category, Oluwatobiloba Adedokun Stephen and Emmy Nwobodo finished with silver and bronze respectively, while Egypt’s Mohammed AbdelRahman claimed gold, with all three athletes earning qualification for Cairo 2027.

Nigeria’s male captain, Timi Seikpotuburu, secured silver in the Senior 110kg left category, finishing behind Egypt’s Mohamed Salama, while Ghana’s Dodzi Assinu took bronze. In the Senior 75kg left, Emmanuel Tuesday claimed silver, improving on his previous outing, with Ghana’s Godwin Sackey winning gold.

Nigeria’s gold medals came in key categories, including Mausi Zannu Elizabeth’s victory in the Senior Women 55kg left, where she defeated Ghana’s Rachel Lankai in the final. Adefunke Afeniforo also secured gold in the Senior Women 65kg left, while Oluwasegun Ajao Tunde triumphed in the Senior -55kg left category.

In the youth division, Emmanuel Tuesday added a gold medal in the Youth 75kg left, while Chidinma Udoeshi topped the podium in the Youth Women 80kg left category.

Nigeria also secured multiple bronze medals through John Iwela, Blessing Ogungbure, Ndidi Winifred, Sandra Ndukwu, Ogochukwu Ezeugo and Peace Anokwuru across various categories.

With a strong medal haul already secured, Team Nigeria has made an early statement in Accra, positioning itself among the leading contenders as the championship continues.
