The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) head coach, Solomon Aliyu has come out with a comforting verdict that the country’s track and field team is 95% ready for this year’s Commonwealth Gmses, which starts on Thursday in Glasgow, Scotland, Sports247 reports.
Although he admitted that not all the invited athletes are at Team Nigeria’s centralised preparation camp at Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) in Scotland, Aliyu asserted that those who are yet to arrive are actually picking up quality exposure by competiing on the international circuit.
Aliyu went on to express profound confidence in the team’s readiness for the Games in Glasgow, while also disclosing that the camp is injury-free, with all the athletes in good health, while they are boosted by effective inputs from the medical, coaching, administrative and support staff.
However, while praising the National Sports Commission (NSC) for providing a world-class preparation camp for the contingent, in an ideal environment and conducive atmosphere, Aliyu stressed that success at Glasgow 2026 will depend not only on physical fitness but also on mental strength and discipline.
He then urged the athletes to remain focused, work hard during training and get ready to compete with confidence, as he affirmed that everything has gone according to plan and the squad is in top shape ahead of the Games, where Nigeria will present a strong contingent across various track and field events.
Aliyu submitted, “Our preparation put in place by the National Sports Commission has been first-class. The training camp in Aberdeen has provided the athletes with the right environment to prepare effectively, and we are grateful for the support.
“Team Nigeria is about 95 percent ready for the Games. The athletes are in Aberdeen for the final phase of preparations before the competition begins, and everything is going according to plan. There have been no injuries.
“We have an excellent support system in place to ensure the athletes remain in top physical and mental condition throughout the camp and into the Games. Nigeria is blessed with enormous sporting talent across the country.”
