The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has released its official selection criteria for athletes competing at next month’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by AFN Secretary-General, Israel Inwang, the federation confirmed that only athletes who have met the Entry Standard or are ranked within the top 20 in the World Ranking Quota will be considered for selection.

According to the AFN, the new guidelines, which take immediate effect, are aimed at ensuring that only committed and top-performing athletes represent Nigeria on the global stage.
The federation stressed that the policy is also intended to promote team spirit, collective responsibility, and a culture of professionalism within Nigerian athletics.
“All stakeholders are to ensure full compliance with these directives. The AFN remains committed to supporting athletes who demonstrate both athletic excellence and professional conduct,” the statement read.
The federation further reiterated its stance on maintaining high standards of discipline and professionalism, warning that only athletes who meet the set requirements will make the final squad.
Athletes have until August 24, 2025, to secure qualification through the Entry Standard or World Ranking before the final Nigerian team list for Tokyo 2025 is published.
