AFCON 2025: Wilfred Ndidi Reflects on Super Eagles Opener, Assures Team Will Improve against Tunisia

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi has expressed satisfaction with Nigeria’s opening victory at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025, while admitting there is room for improvement ahead of the next Group C encounter against Tunisia.

Nigeria began their AFCON 2025 campaign with a hard-fought win over Tanzania, securing all three points in what Ndidi described as a typical first match of a major tournament.

“It was a good game,” Ndidi said after the match. “The first game of a tournament is always like this — you’re trying to get momentum. But it was really good. We got the three points, which is the most important thing.”

The Leicester City midfielder, who is leading the Super Eagles officially as captain for the first time at the tournament, praised the team’s overall performance, particularly in the opening half.
“I think the first half was good, the pace was good,” he noted.

“In the second half, maybe we were a bit tired, but that’s football. Things didn’t go exactly as planned, but we reacted very well, and I’m proud of the team.”

Ndidi also acknowledged that Nigeria must improve as the competition progresses, stressing that the technical crew and players will carefully review the performance.

“There’s always space for improvement,” he added. “We’ll go back, watch the game, see what we did well and what we should have done better. We’ll work on that ahead of the next match.”

Looking ahead to the clash with Tunisia, Ndidi remained confident in the team’s ability to grow stronger during the tournament.

“With the help of the team, the manager and everyone involved, everything is possible,” he said when asked about replicating or surpassing past AFCON achievements.

Addressing concerns about Nigeria conceding goals, Ndidi played down worries over the lack of a clean sheet.
“I’m not worried at all,” he stated. “We got the three points, and that’s what matters most.”

Nigeria will face Tunisia in their next Group C fixture as they continue their push for a strong showing at AFCON 2025.
