AFCON 2025: Under-Fire Nwabali Cites Injury After Another Shaky Display

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has blamed an injury setback for his unconvincing display during Nigeria’s tense 3–2 victory over Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Chippa United shot-stopper came under heavy criticism after conceding a soft opening goal and showing uncertainty in several key moments throughout the encounter.

Nwabali struggled badly for Tunisia’s opener, slipping awkwardly and failing to recover in time to make a meaningful save, a moment that set the tone for a nervy outing.

Fitness concerns have trailed the goalkeeper into the tournament, with his club coach earlier confirming that he had managed multiple injuries before AFCON 2025 kicked off.

Despite those concerns, the Super Eagles technical crew included Nwabali in the final squad, placing faith in his recovery, experience, and prior contributions.

He initially eased doubts with a solid pre-tournament performance against Egypt, raising hopes that he had regained full sharpness.

However, his display against Tunisia reignited questions over his positioning, decision-making, and overall reliability under sustained pressure.

Speaking after the match, Nwabali admitted that lingering injury issues affected his condition but praised Nigeria’s medical team for helping him remain available.

“I was injured, but the doctors and physios helped me stay fit enough to play for my country,” Nwabali said.

“It is quite tough for me because it’s not something you easily come out to say. Most times, what people see online is true. I try to stay strong and represent my country the best way I can.”

The situation now poses a dilemma for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, with crucial AFCON fixtures approaching and goalkeeping decisions looming.

Fans and supporters have grown increasingly critical of Nwabali’s recent performances, arguing that his concentration and confidence have dipped since the start of the year.

Calls for his replacement have intensified, with his temperament also coming under scrutiny after the Tunisia match, where a late, reckless challenge nearly earned him a needless red card.
