AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Depart Fez for Marrakech Ahead of Quarter-final Clash with Algeria

The Super Eagles of Nigeria left Fez for Marrakech on Thursday afternoon as preparations intensify for their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final encounter against Algeria.

Nigeria have enjoyed an impressive campaign so far, winning all four matches played at the tournament.

The Eagles defeated Tanzania 2–1, Tunisia 3–2 and Uganda 3–1 to finish top of Group C, one of the standout performances of the group stage.

By virtue of topping their group, the Super Eagles remained in Fez for the Round of 16, where they delivered a commanding display to overwhelm Mozambique 4–0 and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

However, the build-up to their departure was briefly overshadowed by concerns over unpaid bonuses.

The players reportedly skipped Wednesday afternoon’s training session and threatened not to travel to Marrakech unless assurances were given over the payment of their accrued bonuses.

Following interventions, calm was restored after the team received firm assurances that the necessary approvals had been granted and payments would be effected on Thursday or Friday, allowing the squad to proceed with their travel plans.

Nigeria will take on Algeria on Saturday at 5:00 pm in what promises to be a fiercely contested quarter-final, given both teams’ strong performances at the tournament and their long-standing rivalry in previous AFCON encounters.
