AFCON 2025: Penalty Shootout Is All About Luck – Osimhen

Galatasaray of Turkey striker, Victor James Osimhen has hinted that luck played a big part in how Morocco defeated Nigeria in Wednesday’s semi-final clash at the Africa Cup of Nations, especially when the game entered penalties shootout.

Sports247 reports that, while equally praising the quality of the Moroccan side, Osimhen insisted the Eagles gave a good show against the hosts, but reckoned that luck was against them when it mattered most.

He further acknowledged that the Super Eagles now have to wait until the next AFCON to be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda for the Nigerian players to take another shot at trying to win a fourth continental title for their country.

Osimhen told Canal+: “It is disappointing, and it is hurting. Now, we have to wait for more years to try to prove a point.

“There are greater things ahead, but the whole squad is sad and disappointed because I believe we could have won the trophy.”

He concluded by giving accolades to the Eagles for stretching the Moroccans all the way into penalties, at which point he reckoned that luck took over and the hosts had more of it to carry the day.

“It was one of the most difficult games, and when you play against this kind of quality team, you have to be alert at every time.

“For us to play them and get to penalties shows the strength we have as a group and individuals. But penalties are a game of luck, and that’s football,” Osimhen submitted.
