AFCON 2025: Osimhen Proud As Super Eagles Deliver Win In His First Game As Captain

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has expressed pride after Nigeria’s 3–1 victory over Uganda, describing the result as special because it marked his first match as captain at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Osimhen, who led the team in their final Group C encounter in Fès, congratulated goalscorers Paul Onuachu and Raphael Onyedika for their contributions, praising the collective effort of the squad.

“I’m really happy for Paul and Raphael,” Osimhen said. “They took their chances well, and that’s important for the team.”

Reflecting on the experience of captaining the Super Eagles, the Napoli forward admitted that the role gave him a new perspective on leadership within the squad.

“This was my first game as captain, and now I understand why Wilfred Ndidi is always happy when the team wins,” he said.

Despite the comfortable result, Osimhen was quick to point out that Nigeria are still a work in progress, acknowledging that there were moments during the game that need improvement.

“There were some lapses in our play, and we know that,” he added. “But the good thing is that we’ll fix them as we go forward.”

Osimhen emphasized that the focus within the camp remains on steady improvement rather than complacency, especially as the tournament enters the knockout phase.

“At this stage, every game gets tougher. We have to stay focused, work hard and keep improving,” he said.

Nigeria finished Group C with a perfect record of three wins from three matches, boosting confidence ahead of the Round of 16. Osimhen believes the unity within the squad will be crucial as the Super Eagles continue their quest for AFCON glory.

“We’re together as a team, and that’s the most important thing,” he concluded.
