AFCON 2025: I Want To Win Something With This Squad – Osimhen

Galatasaray of Turkey striker, Victor James Osimhen has come out with a down-to-earth confession that he puts all energy into every match he plays for the Super Eagles because he wants to win something with the squad.

Sports247 reports that Osimhen disclosed as much after helping Nigeria defeat Algeria 2-0 in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals on Saturday evening.

Osimhen scored a goal and got an assist that earned him the game’s man of the match award, but the 2023 African Footballer of The Year declared that he is not thinking of personal laurels alone.

The Chile 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup gold medalist and highest goals scorer added that he reflects on every match and works hard in training so that he can keep on getting better.

Osimhen disclosed, “I’ve evolved a lot because I always try to do better. As a player, I always meditate, and I go back to review the mistakes I’ve made.

“I always try and see how I can improve myself. I’m happy that now I have so much confidence in the way I play, and with the help of my teammates, I’m getting better.”

However, the product of Ultimate Strikers Football Academy of Lagos, who previously played for VfL Wolfsburg of Germany, Racing Charleroi of Belgium, Lille Metropole of France and SSC Napoli of Italy, downplayed his chances of emerging top scorer at AFCON 2025.

“For me, it’s not just about the goals or the assists but to win something with this squad, and I think we are on the right path.

“It’s not going to be easy, but I think, from the last AFCON to this one, I’ve upgraded a lot as a player and a man. I’m just trying to do my bit.

“I’m not trying to do everything myself, but I hope we will win as a team,” said Osimhen, who now has four goals at AFCON 2025.

That puts him just one behind the tournament’s top scorer, Brahim Diaz of Morocco, thereby setting the stage for a mammoth battle between them at opposing ends in Wednesday’s semi-final.

The tango in Rabat will also be a tie breaker of sort between both sides, as they have won two games apiece in their past AFCON ties – Morocco got 3-1 and 2-1 as hosts in 1976, while Nigeria also won on home soil 1-0 in 1980 and 2-0 in 2000.
