AFCON 2025: Ejiofor Calls for Better Communication in Super Eagles Defence

Former Super Eagles defender Eric Ejiofor has urged Nigeria’s players to improve communication at the back as the tournament enters the knockout phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Ejiofor acknowledged the Super Eagles’ strong showing in the group stage but warned that defensive lapses caused by poor communication could be costly in the latter rounds. He noted that conceding cheap goals often stems from hesitation, misunderstanding and lack of coordination among defenders and midfielders.

According to the former international, better organisation and constant talking on the pitch are essential, especially when defending crosses, set pieces and counter-attacks. He stressed that defenders must guide one another throughout matches to avoid being caught out of position.

Ejiofor added that while Nigeria’s attacking quality has been impressive, balance remains key at this stage of the competition. He believes tightening communication at the back would make the Super Eagles a more complete and difficult side to beat.

With Nigeria preparing to face Mozambique in the Round of 16 on Monday, 5 January, Ejiofor said the team has enough experience and quality to correct these issues quickly if the players stay focused and disciplined.
