AFCON 2025: Egbe Warns Super Eagles to Finish Strong Ahead of Quarterfinal Match

Former Green Eagles goalkeeper Etta Egbe has cautioned the Super Eagles to maintain focus and intensity until the final whistle as they prepare for the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Reacting to Nigeria’s emphatic Round of 16 victory, Egbe praised the team’s attacking efficiency but raised concerns over moments of lost concentration late in games. He warned that such lapses could prove costly as the tournament enters its knockout phase, where margins are much thinner and mistakes are often punished.

“The team has done very well to reach this stage, but they must learn to finish matches strongly,” Egbe said. “At the quarterfinal level, you cannot afford to switch off, even when you’re in control of the game.”

The former shot-stopper stressed that maintaining defensive discipline and mental sharpness throughout the match will be critical, especially against more experienced opposition. He added that knockout football demands maturity, game management and constant communication across the pitch.

Egbe believes the Super Eagles have the quality to go deep in the competition but insists that turning dominance into clean, controlled finishes will be key to sustaining their momentum.

Nigeria now faces a major test against Algeria national football team in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Marrakesh. The former goalkeeper described the fixture as a defining moment for the team.

“Algeria are strong, disciplined and very experienced,” he added. “Nigeria must stay compact, focused and ruthless when chances come. If they do that and finish games properly, they have what it takes to move on.”

As AFCON 2025 reaches its decisive stage, Egbe’s message is clear: talent alone is not enough — concentration and composure until the end could determine Nigeria’s fate against Algeria.
