AFCON 2025: Eagles’ 4-0 Spanking Of Mozambique Saves Nigeria From Unwanted Nations Cup Record

The Super Eagles’ 4-0 of spanking of Mozambique in Monday’s round of 16 fixture saved Nigeria from joining an array of countries that have conceded 100 or more goals in the Africa Cup of Nations history.

Sports247 reports that a 20th minute finish by Ademola Lookman was followed by Victor Osimhen’s brace in the 25th and 47th minutes, after which Akor Adams made it four in the 75th, but The Mambas failed to net one.

This means the Eagles were finally able to keep a clean sheet for the first time at Maroc 2025, even as Coach Eric Chelle’s men romp further as the ongoing competition’s top scoring team with 12 goals now in their kitty.

The Eagles were able to put an end to a shaky run that saw them concede goals in each of their previous three matches of this tournament – 2-1 versus Tanzania, 3-2 against Tunisia and 3-1 with Uganda.

Therefore, the Eagles have, for now, put on hold the possibility of them joining Cote d’Ivoire (112), DR Congo (108) and Tunisia (102) as the fourth team in AFCON history to concede 100 or more goals.

However, Sports247 reports further that the Eagles will have to work harder in the next stage of the ongoing competition, as they will meet the winner between Algeria and DR Congo in the quarter-finals.

This means the Nigerian players will come up against two teams that hold bragging rights against them from recent games, expecially for DR Congo, who defeated the Eagles via penalties in the 2026 World Cup play-off final in November.

On the other hand, Algeria defeated Nigeria with a last minute free kick from Riyard Mahrez in the semi-finals of AFCON 2019, which could equally be a morale booster for them if they set up a last-eight clash with Nigeria this week.
