Speaking after the game, Onuachu said he felt confident on the pitch and believed the overall team performance showed promise, despite the defeat.
“It felt good to play in the friendly against Egypt. I think we had a good game,” Onuachu said.
The towering forward explained that his confidence was evident in his movement and involvement, even though he did not get on the scoresheet.
“I was full of confidence, and I think it showed in how I played. Even though I didn’t score, the performance was there,” he added.
Onuachu noted that friendly matches are primarily about preparation, rhythm and understanding rather than results, especially with AFCON just around the corner.
“These games are meant to prepare us. It’s about building chemistry and understanding what the coach wants,” he said.
The striker acknowledged the disappointment of losing but stressed that the team should not overlook the positives.
“Of course, nobody likes to lose, but we played well as a team and created moments we can build on,” he explained.
Onuachu also praised the coaching staff for using the match to test different options and assess players in various roles.
“The coach tried different things, and that’s important at this stage. It helps the team grow,” he noted.
Looking ahead to AFCON, the former Genk striker expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances, insisting the squad has the quality to compete at the highest level.
“We have good players and a good spirit in the team. If we keep working, we’ll be ready,” he said.
Onuachu added that personal goals take a back seat when representing the national team, stressing that collective success matters most.
“For me, it’s about the team. Whether I score or not, the most important thing is that Nigeria does well,” he stated.
As the Super Eagles turn their attention fully to the AFCON in Morocco, Onuachu’s calm and confident outlook reflects a squad determined to fine-tune its performance and peak at the right moment on the continental stage.
