AFCON 2025: Chelle Details Onyeka’s Inclusion Against Tunisia

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has shed light on his decision to deploy Frank Onyeka in midfield during Nigeria’s dramatic 3–2 win over Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Nigerian tactician altered his starting lineup from the team that overcame Tanzania in their opening fixture.

Samuel Chukwueze was omitted, Onyeka was introduced into the midfield, while Bruno Onyemaechi came in for Zaidu Sanusi at left-back.

Explaining his choices, Chelle said the changes were driven by the need to match Tunisia’s intensity and physical approach.

“Against Tanzania, we expected a low block, so we selected players who are comfortable on the ball,” Chelle said after the match.

“But against Tunisia, I wanted more aggression and intensity, particularly in midfield. For about 75 minutes, we controlled that area, and that was the objective.”

Onyeka’s inclusion brought energy and bite to Nigeria’s midfield, allowing the Super Eagles to press higher, disrupt Tunisia’s rhythm and dominate central duels for much of the contest.

The midfielder’s performance helped Nigeria impose their style of play and create the chances that resulted in three goals against the North African side.

The win confirmed Nigeria’s qualification for the Round of 16 and underlined their strong start to the tournament.

Chelle will now turn his attention to the Super Eagles’ final group game against Uganda, as Nigeria aim to finish the group phase on a high note.
