Bassey, who featured at the back as the Super Eagles completed a perfect group-stage campaign, described the news surrounding Joshua as deeply saddening, especially given reports that the accident involved loss of lives.
“It’s a very sad moment,” Bassey said. “My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives, and I wish Anthony a speedy recovery.”
The Fulham defender stressed that moments like this put football into perspective, reminding athletes of the importance of unity, compassion and support beyond the pitch.
“Football is important, but life is bigger than the game,” he added.
Bassey’s message came after Nigeria sealed top spot in Group C with nine points from three matches, setting up a Round of 16 clash as the Super Eagles continue their push for AFCON 2025 success.
The defender praised the team’s togetherness during the group stage and noted that maintaining focus and unity will be crucial as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
“We’re happy with how the group stage went, but now the real work starts,” Bassey said.
Nigeria will now turn attention to the knockout rounds, carrying confidence from their unbeaten run and the strong bond within the squad.
