Speaking after the Round of 16 victory that booked Nigeria’s place in the last eight, the Fulham defender said the team deliberately raised its defensive focus to address issues from earlier matches where late goals had crept in.
Bassey explained that the coaching staff emphasized concentration, compactness and communication, especially in the closing stages of games. According to him, maintaining intensity for the full 90 minutes was a key objective, and the players responded well.
“We worked extra hard to stay disciplined at the back,” Bassey said. “In previous games, we conceded late, so this time it was important for us to remain solid from start to finish. Keeping a clean sheet was a big confidence boost for everyone.”
The defender added that defensive solidity is not just the responsibility of the back line but the entire team, noting that midfielders and attackers also played their roles by pressing intelligently and tracking back when required.
With Nigeria now preparing for a high-stakes quarterfinal against Algeria national football team, Bassey stressed that the team understands the size of the challenge ahead. He described Algeria as a technically strong and well-organized side but insisted the Super Eagles are ready to rise to the occasion.
“We know what’s at stake now,” he added. “Algeria is a strong team, but we’ll stay focused, disciplined and united. If we keep doing the right things, we believe we can move on.”
Nigeria will face Algeria on Saturday in Marrakesh, with a place in the AFCON semifinals on the line.
