AFCON 2025: Alex Iwobi’s Father Reflects on Son’s Rise, Credits Okocha’s Influence

Chuka Iwobi, father of Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi, has reflected with pride on his son’s football journey, admitting he never imagined how far Alex would go despite encouraging him to love the game from a young age.

Speaking as Nigeria continues its campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Chuka said watching his son grow into a key figure for the Super Eagles has been a deeply fulfilling experience for the family.

He explained that the goal was never fame or status, but raising a child who enjoyed football and stayed disciplined.

He highlighted the strong influence of Nigerian football legend Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, noting that Okocha played a key mentoring role during Alex’s formative years.

According to him, Okocha regularly supported Alex while he was coming through the Arsenal academy, offering encouragement and advice that helped shape his mindset.

Chuka stressed, however, that Alex has gone on to develop his own unique style of play, blending creativity with work rate and intelligence.

He expressed confidence that his son still has more to offer Nigeria and believes the current AFCON campaign could be another defining chapter in his career.

Alex Iwobi has been instrumental in Nigeria’s strong showing at AFCON 2025, providing leadership and creativity as the Super Eagles prepare for their Round of 16 clash against Mozambique.
