AFCON 2025: Adams Akor Ranks High Among Nations Cup Debutants

Sevilla of Spain striker, Adams Jerome Ajor has been ranked high among the top five Africa Cup of Nations debutants won are excelling at the ongoing edition in Morocco.

Sports247 reports that a sterling run that has seen him net two goals and provide same number of assists has shot the Benue State-born hitman into AFCON’s history books.

Akor could have hit a hat-trick during Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in Saturday’s quarter-final fixture at Stade de Marrakech, but he missed a sitter, was denied earlier by The Fennecs’ goalkeeper and then hit the upright later on.

Despite his unlucky spell against Algeria, Akor had proven his mettle in earlier matches, thereby setting him out among Nigeria’s heroes en route to the AFCON 2025 semi-finals, where they will tango hosts Morocco at 9pm on Wednesday.

The former Montpellier of France striker’s form has now been noted in an article by Tribal Football, which ranked him alongside four other debuting stars currently exciting AFCON fans in various venues across Morocco.

Akor is joined on the roll of AFCON’s brilliant rookies by Ibrahim Maza (Bayer Leverkusen of Germany and Algeria), as well as Ibrahim Mbaye (Paris-Saint Germain of France and Senegal).

Also listed alongside Akor are Christian Kofane (Bayer Leverkusen of Germany and Cameroon) as well as AFCON 2025’s current top scorer with five goals, Brahim Diaz (Real Madrid of Spain and Morocco).

The publication’s citation for Akor read in part, “The big 25-year-old striker is a great addition to a fearsome Nigerian attack led by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

“Adams, who joined La Liga side Sevilla from Montpellier a year ago, was not part of the Super Eagles set-up until October, when he scored on his debut in World Cup qualifying against Lesotho.

“He started the first two games in Morocco, before being rotated out against Uganda. But he returned for the 4-0 demolition of Mozmbique on Monday and played a starring role with a goal and an assist.”
