AFCON 2021: Alex Iwobi Warns Against Nigeria Complacency

Alex Iwobi has insisted that Nigeria cannot afford to be complacent despite a bright start to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The Super Eagles defeated rivals Egypt 1-0 at Roumdé Adjia Stadium last Tuesday to open their AFCON campaign.

However, Iwobi is taking nothing for granted as Austine Eguavoen’s troops turn their attention to today’s encounter against the Falcons of Jediane.

Speaking ahead of the game, the Everton star said: “Personally, I’m always ready no matter what game it is. Obviously, it’s a big competition and we’ve already made our mark in that first game. But we can’t be complacent. We are going to give the same energy and desire that we showed in the first game. Hopefully, we get the result that we need.”

“The team is really set up especially after that first performance but we are not going to rest on that. We are going to keep ongoing. And yeah, we are hungry and we want to prove a point in this tournament.”

“The only assurance I can give is that we are going to give our all and fight for our country. Hopefully, we get the result we want. We are going to fight for our country,” Alex Iwobi added.

Meanwhile, All 26 players (bar the injured defender Chidozie Awaziem) were on duty on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with Head Coach Augustine Eguavoen telling the boys clearly that they are yet to win anything, but are on the way to doing great things if they keep level heads.

Victory will not only assure the Eagles of a place in the Round of 16 but also brings closer the possibility of topping the group and therefore retaining the familiar surroundings of Garoua as a venue.

Nigeria takes on Sudan at 5:00 pm local time for their second group game today.
