Sports administrator and journalist Tobi Adepoju has issued a strong warning to aspiring footballers, cautioning them against agents or agencies that demand money to facilitate moves abroad.
In a post shared on his Facebook page, Adepoju reiterated a message he says he has delivered repeatedly over the years, stressing that legitimate football agents and academies do not ask players to fund their own transfers.
“Any agent or agency that asks you for money to take you abroad—kindly run,” he wrote.
According to Adepoju, there are only two explanations when an agent demands payment from a player: either the player is not good enough, or the individual making the request is a fraudster.
He explained that genuine agents, agencies, academies, and football clubs are expected to invest in talented players, covering the costs associated with their development and career progression.
“Agents, agencies, academies, and football clubs are meant to invest in talented footballers and fund the player’s process and progress to stardom,” he stated.
Adepoju advised players who are asked to pay to take a step back and critically assess their abilities. If they truly believe in their talent, he urged them to walk away and seek out credible agents who can recognize and invest in their potential.
He also cautioned that some scammers operate from abroad and may even claim to hold FIFA licenses, warning players to remain vigilant.
“If you are good enough, run away from the person and seek agents who can spot and believe in your talent. They will invest and take you to the top,” Adepoju added.
“There are many scammers based abroad and with FIFA licenses. Beware”, he warned.
The warning serves as a timely reminder to young footballers to exercise caution, conduct due diligence, and avoid schemes that could derail their careers.
