Adepoju Urges Eagles: ‘Stop Crying — AFCON Is Weeks Away, Go and Make Nigeria Smile Again!’

Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju, widely known as The Headmaster, has urged Nigerians and the national team to move on from the heartbreak of missing out on yet another FIFA World Cup, insisting that the time for mourning is over, because AFCON is just around the corner.

Adepoju admitted that the failure to qualify for two consecutive World Cups is “sad, painful, and deeply unpredictable,” but stressed that dwelling on the disappointment will only harm Nigeria’s chances at the Africa Cup of Nations, kicking off in Morocco next month.

“It’s sad, yes. Nobody expected this. But there’s no point crying over spilt milk, AFCON is almost here, and we must focus,” he said.

The former Real Sociedad star reminded fans that Nigeria finished second at the last AFCON, fighting their way to the final in a tournament full of drama and surprises. While that run brought pride, Adepoju believes the team must deliver even more this time.

“After winning silver last year, the Super Eagles must try their best to make Nigerians happy in Morocco,” he insisted.

Adepoju said the World Cup miss should become motivation, not a source of paralysis. According to him, the players must shift their mindset quickly, recover emotionally, and enter AFCON with hunger and unity.

He stressed that preparation will be crucial, especially after such a disappointing qualification campaign. The Super Eagles must fix issues in midfield control, defensive coordination, and finishing areas that cost them key matches.

“AFCON is always tough. We must prepare well, stay focused, and enter with the right mentality,” he added.

Adepoju also urged fans to support the team rather than tear it down, saying that negativity will only increase pressure.

“We all feel the pain, but this is when we must rally around the team. AFCON is a chance to restore pride,” he said.

He concluded with a message of resilience and renewed hope:
“Nigeria has fallen, but we can rise again. Let AFCON be the redemption.”
