Adepoju Urges Caution: Nigeria’s World Cup Hope Alive but Fragile

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju, has admitted disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to defeat South Africa in their last qualifier but insists all hope is not lost following FIFA’s points deduction from Bafana Bafana.

Adepoju, nicknamed “The Headmaster” for his aerial prowess, said Nigeria’s World Cup dreams remain alive — though hanging by a thread. “It’s disappointing we couldn’t take maximum points against South Africa, but football is full of surprises. The deduction has reopened the race,” he told reporters.

FIFA recently sanctioned South Africa for fielding an ineligible player, stripping them of three points and two goals — a verdict that has revived Nigeria’s qualification prospects.

Adepoju, however, warned that Nigeria must not rely on mathematics or fortune. “We should forget about calculations. Only back-to-back wins can keep us alive. Six points — nothing less,” he stressed.

The former Real Sociedad star also called for improved concentration in attack and defense. “We must stay sharp in both boxes. A single mistake can end our dream,” he said.

Despite describing Nigeria’s chances as “faint but alive,” Adepoju remains optimistic that the players can rise to the occasion. “These are professionals; they know what’s at stake. If they show hunger and discipline, qualification is still possible.”

As the Super Eagles gear up for decisive clashes with Lesotho and Benin, Adepoju’s words resonate as both a warning and motivation: Nigeria’s fate is still in their hands — if they are bold enough to grab it.
