Adepoju Sounds the Alarm: ‘AFCON Will Be War — Only Proper Preparation Can Save Nigeria’

Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju, popularly known as The Headmaster, has issued a strong warning to Nigeria ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicking off next month in Morocco, insisting that only proper preparation will guarantee the country’s success.

Nigeria has been drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania — a group many fans consider “manageable.” But Adepoju has dismissed such talk, cautioning that underestimating any opponent at AFCON is a recipe for disaster.

“We must prepare properly. If Nigeria wants to win AFCON, there is no shortcut. Preparation is everything,” he said.

Adepoju stressed that every team raises its level when playing against Nigeria due to the country’s history, reputation, and intimidating football profile on the continent.

“Teams will always give their best against us. That’s why we must be even more prepared than they are,” he added.

The former Real Sociedad midfielder said Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the World Cup should serve as a wake-up call, not a burden. He believes the Super Eagles still possess enough talent to dominate their group — if the technical crew gets the preparation right.

“If we do the right things, we will have no problem qualifying from the group. But we must not think it will be easy,” he warned.

Adepoju outlined key areas Nigeria must focus on:

Selecting the right players based on current form, not reputation.

Building tactical stability and match rhythm through high-quality training sessions.

Ensuring players’ mental readiness after the disappointment of missing the World Cup.

Creating winning chemistry before the opening group game.

He also urged the NFF to avoid logistical lapses that have historically disrupted Nigeria’s tournament preparations.

“From camp organization to friendly matches to team bonding — everything must be done properly. You don’t win AFCON with half preparation,” he insisted.

Adepoju concluded with a stern reminder that AFCON is unforgiving:
“Nigeria has the players. But talent alone won’t win this tournament — preparation will.”
