Adeleye Credits Preparation, Self-Belief for Nigeria’s Davis Cup Victory Over Uzbekistan

Nigeria’s top-ranked tennis player Daniel Adeleye has attributed the country’s Davis Cup victory over Uzbekistan to careful preparation and strong self-belief, insisting he never doubts himself when representing Nigeria.

Speaking after the tie, Adeleye revealed that the performance was long planned, crediting his coach for instilling confidence in him even before the competition began.

“Before I came here, it was planned in my score because my coach always spoke to me. Even though he’s not in Nigeria now, maybe a few people know him, Coach Paul,” Adeleye said.

“He told me, ‘Daniel, you are good, you don’t need to prove yourself to people before they recognize you.’”

The Nigerian ace, who currently trains at the Lagos Country Club alongside Seye, said the victory did not come as a surprise, noting that he has been building toward such moments for years, including during his time competing in Zimbabwe.

“Winning is something I’ve been expecting for a long time now. Ever since Zimbabwe, because I also played there. I’ve been playing for Nigeria for over 18 years,” he stated.

Adeleye also highlighted his pride in representing the country, stressing that while individual losses are part of sport, his mindset changes completely when playing for Nigeria.

“Ever since I started playing for Nigeria, I’ve never lost a battle for my country. Individually, yes, but for my country, no. As long as I’m still wearing this shirt, I’ll never lose for Nigeria.”

Reflecting on his journey on the international circuit, Adeleye acknowledged competing against physically superior athletes but maintained that belief and opportunity remain key to his performances.

“I’ve travelled around a lot before the Davis Cup and I’ve seen many players. I always tell myself they are not better than me, they’re just better athletes. That’s why they’re doing well,” he explained.

“Any chance I get to prove myself, I always take it.”
