Adama’s Silver Secures Nigeria a Historic Finish on the Medals Table at 2025 World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships

Nigeria etched its name into the history books at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships 2025, concluding the week-long competition in Otopeni with a joint 18th-place finish on the overall medal standings.

The highlight of Nigeria’s campaign came on Saturday, August 23, when 17-year-old Abdul Jabar Adama stunned the swimming world by clinching silver in the men’s 50m butterfly.

Clocking an impressive 23.64 seconds, Adama touched the wall just 0.10 seconds behind Great Britain’s Dean Fearn, who claimed gold.

His medal represents a groundbreaking moment for Nigerian swimming — the nation’s first-ever podium finish at the Junior World Championship level.

Adama’s brilliance was not confined to the final. In the preliminaries, he shattered his own Nigerian national record, lowering it from 23.81 seconds (set in April at the Aquatics GB Championships) to 23.61 seconds, a performance that underlined his rapid rise as one of Africa’s brightest young swimming talents.

Nigeria’s historic breakthrough drew widespread commendation from the country’s sporting authorities, with many hailing Adama’s feat as a landmark moment capable of inspiring a new generation of swimmers back home.

Meanwhile, the overall medal table was topped by the United States, who dominated with 22 medals (10 gold, 6 silver, 6 bronze).

Neutral Athletes (NAB) followed in second place with a haul of 15 medals.

For Nigeria, however, the single silver medal carried a weight far beyond numbers.

It symbolized not only the arrival of a future star but also the nation’s long-awaited emergence on the world stage of junior swimming.
