Speaking with Sports247, Amadi revealed that she had attempted to register for the marathon over the past three years but was unable to, either due to timing or closed registration.
“I wanted to register like three years ago, but it was not possible. Last year, by the time I decided, registration had closed. So I’ve really been looking forward to this year,” she said.
Although not a professional athlete, Amadi noted that her love for running dates back to her school days, even though she was once discouraged from pursuing it competitively because of her age.
“I’ve always loved running, but there was never an opportunity. When I tried getting into it, they said it was too late for my age,” she explained.
Commenting on the organization of the marathon, Amadi admitted she initially felt confused but later praised the structure and process put in place by the organizers.
“At first, I thought it wasn’t organized, but later I realized there was a process. I love the way they organized it,” she added.
Despite registering for the 10km race instead of her preferred 42km distance, Amadi remains optimistic and sees the shorter race as a stepping stone.
“For me, I feel like I’m going to win. I registered without checking the distance and later realized it was 10km. But being my first time, it’s a good start and preparation for next year,” she said confidently.
Amadi also revealed the personal sacrifices she has made to participate, including skipping work commitments, while stressing that she has been deliberately training for the event.
“I’ve been practicing for this. I stopped workouts and focused only on jogging because that’s what the marathon is about. I have the endurance to jog for a very long time,” she concluded.
As race day approaches, Amadi is determined to turn her long wait into a memorable debut at the Lagos City Marathon.
