With just 23Days to go, the city of Abuja is heating up as the countdown to the 14th African Armwrestling Championship intensifies.
At the center of the excitement is His Excellency Barr. Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and Chief Host of the championship, who is set to receive the official Armwrestling Championship Torch—a major symbolic moment that signals Nigeria’s full readiness to host Africa.
The historic event, scheduled for July 23–27, will also feature the 7th Para-Armwrestling Championship, and is expected to welcome athletes and officials from 24 African countries—making it the largest armwrestling gathering in the continent’s history.

The championship torch—representing power, pride, and continental unity—will be formally presented to the FCT Minister in a high-profile handover. It will then tour symbolic locations across Abuja, igniting excitement in the lead-up to the competition.
According to Hon. Adeboye Adeyinka, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development,
“This torch represents the spirit of the sport and the heart of the continent. Abuja is on fire with excitement, and Wike’s leadership as Chief Host will energize the entire championship atmosphere.”
Preparations are in top gear with the recent unveiling of the official mascot, custom competition jerseys, and the release of a 172-member Team Nigeria list, following an intensive training camp at TDC, Abuja.
The LOC, in partnership with the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation under the leadership of Engr. Samuel Jackson, is also working with top brands including Prostar Sports International (Official Kit Partner), and leading transport, accommodation, and media stakeholders to deliver a truly unforgettable experience.
With 24 nations, hundreds of athletes, and a championship torch now in motion, Abuja is on fire—and the whole continent is watching.
