Above 50 Football Competition: Monday Odiaka Leads Ajegunle FC Maiden Edition Tittle Triumph, Lauds Tournament Organizers

One of Nigeria’s most prolific striker during his playing days, Monday Odiaka has led Ajegunle FC to a title triumph in the maiden edition of the Above 50 Football Competition against Abeokuta FC as he lauds the tournament organizers for putting up such initiative.

A most searched name in Nigeria football when you talk of the U-20, he represented the country way back in 1985, he was the captain of Ajegunle FC ensuring to make that resonate declaration that AJ is the home of football and that they are the ones that produces the highest number of talent to Nigeria and it’s not surprising that Ajegunle won the first and maiden edition of the Above 50 Football Competition.

A delighted Odiaka after the victory at Surulere Legacy Pitch couldn’t find the right words to describe the moment in the post match assessment with Sports247.ng.

“I’m very happy, the man that scored the fastest goal in the whole world, 1985 junior World Cup and also the only Nigerian player that his name is in Guinness book of record.”

“In my fifties, lifting up a trophy feels so surreal for my community, Ajegunle FC.”

Addressing the Above 50 football competition initiative – it gladens my heart as it gives the opportunity to see my colleagues. Some of them, we’ve not been seeing. Thirty years, twenty years ago was when I saw them last and this competition has brought us all together back again, it’s wonderful,” he confessed.

“This is the first edition and we are happy that Ajegunle, the home of Football in Nigeria has shown it to the world that when you talk about footballers in Nigeria, you talk about Ajegunle,” he concluded.

Monday Odiaka rose to fame at the 1985 World Youth Championship in Soviet Union, now Russia, where he represented Nigeria’s Flying Eagles and scored the fastest goal ever recorded at the youth tournament.
