In a groundbreaking moment for Nigerian sports, Abia State has officially launched preparations to host two major international para badminton events—the 1st Abia Para Badminton International Championship and the Africa Para Badminton Championships 2025.
This bold move not only marks Nigeria’s debut as host of a global para badminton tournament but also positions Abia as a rising hub of sports excellence in Africa.

The inauguration of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) was held at the Government House in Umuahia on Friday, under the watchful eye of Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu. Both committees will steer the logistics, planning, and execution of the twin championships slated for September 30 to October 12, 2025.
President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), Francis Orbih, praised Governor Alex Otti’s unwavering commitment to sports development, calling the event a “powerful statement about equity, opportunity, and inclusion.” Orbih emphasized the ripple effects these tournaments will have—not only drawing international eyes to Abia but also igniting economic activity and inspiring a generation of para-athletes.
“This is more than sports,” Orbih said. “This is a renaissance. The whole world will be watching Abia—our athletes, our facilities, our people.”
Governor Otti, through his deputy, underscored the state’s readiness, both in infrastructure and ambition, to deliver a world-class event. He called on stakeholders to intensify grassroots development and leverage the moment to build a legacy in African badminton.
Following the inauguration, the committees inspected venues and accommodations, with Orbih expressing satisfaction with ongoing renovations and preparations.
