Abeokuta Set to Host Africa’s Best: AFN President Applauds CAA Team Ahead of U-18/U-20 Athletics Championship

Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State in Southwest Nigeria, is gearing up to welcome the continent’s rising athletic stars as preparations intensify for the Africa U-18/U-20 Athletics Championship, scheduled to take place from July 16 to 20, 2025.

Following a thorough two-day inspection, the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has commended the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) inspection team for their professionalism and detailed evaluation of the facilities.

Led by CAA Director General Lamine Faty of Senegal, the inspection team included Technical and Development Director Aziz Daouda, Lombard Melinda Amana, and Maraire Munyaradzi Nkosasa Wilbert. The team began their assessment at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta on Friday, before inspecting the accommodation facilities on Saturday.

Chief Okowa, visibly impressed, said, “I’m really impressed with the way they handled their assignment—very thorough, with an eye for detail and a human touch. The hotels they selected are among the best in the Rock City of Abeokuta.”

The team inspected major hotels including the 153-room Green Legacy Resort and the 173-room Park Inn. In total, over 800 rooms across multiple facilities have been earmarked to host athletes, officials, journalists, and special guests from World Athletics.

The AFN President also urged the CAA to adopt the standard Nigerian hospitality practice of single-occupancy room arrangements for athletes and officials during the championship.

Representing the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) was its Secretary, Shagaya Abdulmumeen, who coordinated the visit and provided logistical support throughout the inspection.

CAA’s Director General, Lamine Faty, had nothing but praise for the organizers and the host city. “First of all, I want to express my sincere appreciation to our Nigerian hosts. They were truly excellent. We had a comfortable stay and were provided with the best conditions to do our work,” he said.

He concluded with a strong vote of confidence: “Abeokuta is ready to host the continent come July.”

With preparations moving at full speed and the CAA’s endorsement secured, all eyes are now on Abeokuta as it prepares to stage one of the most anticipated youth athletics events on the African calendar.
