Nigerian football bids farewell to one of its greatest defensive stalwarts following Osinachi Ohale’s official retirement from international football.
The 34-year-old center-back leaves behind an extraordinary legacy after 16 years of dedicated service in the green and white jersey.
Ohale’s international journey began in 2010 after helping Nigeria capture silver at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.
She seamlessly transitioned into the senior national team, establishing herself as a cornerstone of the Super Falcons’ backline.
Across an exceptional career, she accumulated 86 caps while featuring in seven Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournaments and four FIFA Women’s World Cups.
As one of the most decorated defenders in African women’s football history, Ohale anchored five WAFCON-winning squads, lifting continental glory in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024.
Her physical presence, tactical discipline, and big-game consistency made her a fan favorite and a nightmare for opposition forwards for well over a decade.
“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,”
Ohale shared in her emotional farewell statement. “The jersey will leave my shoulders, but it will never leave my heart. Thank you, Nigeria, for allowing me to live my dream.”
