‘A Good Loss at the Right Time!’ Dombraye Says Egypt Defeat Will Sharpen Super Eagles for AFCON

Former Super Eagles player Eddy Dombraye has described Nigeria’s 2–1 friendly defeat to Egypt as a timely reminder that the team still has work to do ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Reacting to the result, Dombraye insisted the loss should not be viewed negatively but rather as a useful reality check just days before the continental tournament begins.

“It’s actually a good result in that sense. The players will now have it at the back of their minds that there is still work to be done,” Dombraye said.

He explained that friendly matches are meant to expose weaknesses and highlight areas that need improvement, not necessarily to boost confidence through results.

“This loss doesn’t mean the team is bad. It simply reminds them that some aspects of their game need attention,” he added.

Dombraye noted that winning every warm-up game can sometimes create a false sense of security, whereas a defeat forces players and coaches to reassess tactics and focus on correcting mistakes.

“If you win everything, you might think you’re already strong enough. A loss like this keeps everyone grounded,” he explained.

The former Super Eagles midfielder stressed that AFCON is a different challenge entirely, where mistakes are punished more severely and preparation becomes crucial.

“AFCON is about focus and discipline. This result should help the team concentrate more on the task ahead,” he said.

Dombraye also urged fans not to overreact to the friendly defeat, reminding Nigerians that the primary objective was preparation rather than victory.

“Supporters should not panic. The important thing is what the team learns from this game,” he noted.

He added that the coaching crew now has valuable insight into the team’s current shape, strengths and weaknesses.

“Now the coaches know what needs fixing before the tournament starts,” he said.

Dombraye concluded by expressing confidence that the Super Eagles will respond positively.

“If they take the lessons seriously, this loss can actually work in Nigeria’s favour at AFCON,” he added.
