‘A Dream Come True’ Uganda’s Al Hassan Eyes AFCON Surprise in Group with Nigeria and Tunisia

Cranes of Uganda midfielder Baba Al Hassan has described his selection for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco as a dream come true, declaring that Uganda are ready to work hard and challenge expectations in a tough group that includes Nigeria and Tunisia.

Speaking after his inclusion in Uganda’s AFCON squad, Al Hassan said representing his country at the continent’s biggest football tournament is a moment he has always hoped for.

“This is a dream come true for me. Playing at AFCON is something every African player wants,” Al Hassan said.

The midfielder acknowledged the challenge ahead for the Cranes, who have been drawn into a competitive group featuring two of Africa’s traditional powerhouses.

“We know the group is very tough. Nigeria and Tunisia are favourites, and they have great history in this competition,” he admitted.

Despite the difficulty of the group, Al Hassan insisted that Uganda are not traveling to Morocco merely to make up the numbers.

“Anything is possible in football. We believe we can surprise people and qualify from the group,” he said.

Al Hassan stressed that Uganda’s preparations have been focused on discipline, teamwork and belief.

“We are working hard every day. The coaches are preparing us tactically and mentally for the challenge,” he explained.

The Cranes midfielder also highlighted the importance of unity within the squad, noting that AFCON success often depends on collective effort rather than individual brilliance.

“We have to fight for each other. At this level, teamwork makes the difference,” he added.

Al Hassan revealed that the players are fully aware of the attention that games against Nigeria and Tunisia will attract, but see those fixtures as opportunities rather than threats.

“These are the kinds of games you want to play. Facing big teams shows where you stand,” he said.

He also praised the support from Ugandan fans, stating that their encouragement adds motivation to the squad.

“The fans believe in us, and that gives us strength,” he noted.

As AFCON approaches, Al Hassan’s optimism reflects a Ugandan side eager to challenge expectations and prove that they can compete on Africa’s biggest stage, even in a group dominated by established heavyweights.
