The former technical committee chairman of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Barrister Chris Green, slammed anyone suggesting that the new man in charge should be given a free hand to operate as Eagles’ coach.

As debate rages over the appointment of a new coach for the Super Eagles, the issue of independence and free hand for the gaffer keeps popping up like a bad coin.
This comes at a point in which observers believe someone like 1994 African player of the year and former Tanzania handler Emmanuel Amuneke will not get the Eagles’ job because he prefers working without restrictions by administrators.
In similar vein, it has been suggested that former Eagles’ captain, Sunday Ogochukwu Oliseh resigned after barely a year in charge as coach of the Nigerian side because he detested frequent interference by officials in the Football House.
However, Barrister Green has come out with a terse verdict that anyone wishing to coach the Eagles must be ready to work under strict observation and scrutiny of the NFF’s board and the technical committee.
Green admitted there are some coaches who know their onions and would like to work without any constraints, but he further pointed out that there are many other issues attached to coaching that go beyond technical matters.
The football technocrat from Rivers State further opined that the idea of ‘a free hand to operate’ is a myth, as no coach can be given 100% freedom to operate.
He added that every coach has a boss who gives orders, and there must be a technical committee in place to vet programmes before they can be executed.
Green added: “The coach knows what he is doing, and the buck stops on his table.
“He knows technical issues, and it is his business to manage the team, but there’s no way a coach can work independent of the people around him.
“He must be supervised by the management of the Nigeria Football Federation and the technical committee of the NFF.
“Because many other issues and various matters will be brought into play, he needs the assistance and help of the technical committee and the technical department.”
