Aftermath Nigeria’s Withdrawal, 2022 Beach Soccer AFCON Set To Kick Off In Mozambique Today

Following Nigeria’s withdrawal from the 2022 Beach Soccer AFCON, the tournament is set to kick off today in host South coast City Vilankulo in Mozambique.

The Super Sand Eagles who had been drawn in Group A alongside Mozambique, Malawi and Morocco withdrew from the tournament due to lack of funds as gathered.

The event will be beamed in several countries over the next seven days and will feature Africa’s top beach soccer nations with defending champions, Senegal and hosts Mozambique some of the front runners.

The first match will kick-off at 15h30 local time (13h30 GMT) between hosts Mozambique and another Southern African side, Malawi. This will be the only match on the day.

The following day will see all the teams on Group B in action including Senegal who will play Uganda at 14h00 and Madagascar vs Egypt at 15h30.

CAF General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba spent some time at the Arena that has been recently built along the Vilankulo coastline.

Mosengo-Omba said: “The town of Vilankulos is really a beautiful place and will provide a perfect backdrop for what we hope will be a successful Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations. This is an important competition in the CAF calendar.”

“We saw already with the 2021 Beach Soccer AFCON in Senegal that was a top-quality event. We hope this will keep such standards and build from it. We wish the seven countries the best of luck.”
