AFCON 2023: Ekong Ruled Out of São Tomé and Príncipe Clash, Returns To UK For Treatment

Super Eagles Vice Captain, Williams Troost-Ekong has been ruled out of Nigeria 2023 AFCON qualifiers match against Sao Tomé and Príncipe on Monday after sustaining groin injury in yesterday’s match against Sierra Leone, Sports247 Nigeria can report.

Ekong played 82 minutes of Super Eagles’ 2-1 win over the Leone Stars in Abuja on Thursday before he picked up the injury while try to clear the ball to touch.

The 28-year-old defender has subsequently left the team’s camp in Abuja and returned to the United Kingdom to start treatment in preparation for the new league football season with his English club, Watford.

The Super Eagles play Sao Tome and Principe in the next match of the qualification round at the Adrar Stadium in Morocco on Monday, 13th June, 2022 as they hope to take charge of Group A that is currently controlled by Guinea-Bissau.
