Nigeria’s Flamingos have recorded a remarkable milestone at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, with five different players winning the Player of the Match award across six matches at the tournament.
The achievement marks the first time five different Nigerian players have claimed the individual honour at a single edition of a FIFA tournament, highlighting the depth of talent and collective quality within the squad, Sports247 gathered.
The five Flamingos players recognised for their outstanding performances are:
1. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi (Robo Queens) – Against Puerto Rico.
2. Kanyinsola Yusuf (Robo Queens) – Against Korea DPR.
3. Oluebube Umejiaku (Heartland Queens) – Against Mexico.
4. Favour Nkwocha (Robo Queens) – Against Venezuela.
5. Awawu Bashiru (Confluence Queens) – Against Brazil.
The distribution of the awards across five players reflects the contributions of different members of the squad throughout Nigeria’s impressive campaign, rather than relying on individual brilliance alone.
From Adegbuyi’s recognition against Puerto Rico to Bashiru’s award against Brazil, the Flamingos have continued to produce standout individual performances at crucial stages of the competition.
Beyond the individual honours, the milestone represents another significant moment for Nigerian women’s youth football and provides further evidence of the growing talent emerging from the country’s domestic women’s football system.
Five players, five individual awards and one remarkable achievement for the Flamingos.
