Jide Oguntuase Slams NFF For ‘Sheer Foolishness,’ After Giving Eric Chelle Olympic Eagles’ Assignment

Former youth international, Jide Oguntuase has handed a tag of ‘sheer foolishness’ to top shots of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for adding the under-23 national team’s qualification task to the duties of Super Eagles’ coach, Eric Sekou Chelle, Sports247 reports.

Oguntuase, who is now a football coach based in Ikorodu area of Lagos, wondered how Chelle will cope with two crucial assignments at hand, as the senior squad and their under-23 juniors, fondly called Olympic Eagles, will both be involved in tough qualifiers on the same date next month.

The former winger, who was part of the historic under-23 squad that twinkled bright but failed to win the 1991 All Africa Games gold medal in Egypt, took another look at the upcoming fixtures for both teams and concluded that the NFF ought to have picked another gaffer for the Olympic Eagles.

As it were, the Super Eagles are scheduled to resume the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at home versus Tanzania on November 13th inside Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on the same day the under-23 squad start their hunt in the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers.

The Olympic Eagles will play their first leg tie in the penultimate round of the African U23 Cup of Nations qualifiers, for a ticket to Los Angeles 2028, away to DR Congo at TP Mazembe Stadium in Lubumbashi on the dame date – November 13th.

With Chelle surely not able to be in two places at the same and impossible to shuttle between both venues even by air, many Nigerians continue to question the NFF’s decision to give the gaffer both tasks, and Oguntuase has now slammed it as an act of ‘sheer foolishness.’

Oguntuase opined: “Putting him to be in charge of both teams – the Super Eagles and the under-23 – is sheer foolishness. It simply means we don’t have coaches in Nigeria.”

Sports247 reports further that, as the month of November draws nearer, it’s left to be seen if the NFF with back track on the additional assignment for Chelle or whether egg heads at Sunday Dankaro House will stick to their guns.
