“We Are Coming Back With Medals, Not One, Not Two, But Medals!” — Coach Mary Obo Ekpo Reveals How Nigeria’s Boxing Team Turned Tears Into Triumph In Nairobi

Cross River State head coach praises President Tinubu, National Sports Commission and boxing federation leadership as Nigeria's fighters bounce back from early setbacks at African Championships.

NAIROBI, KENYA — Behind Team Nigeria’s remarkable resurgence at the African Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, lies an inspiring story of determination, psychological recovery and the tireless efforts of the coaching crew.

One of the key figures behind the turnaround is Mary Obo Ekpo, Cross River State head coach and one of three coaches accompanying Nigeria’s boxing contingent to the championship.

Speaking exclusively to Sports247, Ekpo revealed how Sunday’s disappointing results became a turning point for the Nigerian boxers, who responded with renewed confidence and determination.

“Sunday was not a day I would want to talk about,” she admitted, reflecting on the painful defeats that threatened Nigeria’s championship ambitions.

However, rather than allowing the setbacks to destroy the team’s confidence, Ekpo explained that the coaching crew immediately began motivating the athletes.

“We had to talk to them and motivate them. That was not what we planned for, but it brought out the best in our boxers. From Monday and now Tuesday, everybody can see the results,” she explained.

The turnaround has seen Nigeria produce five finalists, including Ridwan Raheem, Ajishola Khadijat, Precious Anine, Blessing Orakwe and Patricia Mbata.

Ekpo, who is regularly seen supporting Nigerian fighters at ringside, insisted that the team arrived in Kenya adequately prepared, although unexpected challenges affected some early performances.

She reserved special appreciation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, acknowledging his administration’s support for Nigerian sports.

She also commended National Sports Commission Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade for their contributions to sports development.

The experienced coach further applauded Nigeria Boxing Federation President Adebayo Olawale Edun and Vice President Omonlei Yakubu Imadu for supporting the team’s participation in Nairobi.

According to Ekpo, Nigerian boxers need more international competitions to sharpen their skills and become stronger contenders.

But her strongest message was reserved for those wondering whether Nigeria could return home with honours.

“One thing I can assure them is that we are coming back with medals. Not one, not two, not three, but medals!” she declared.

For Ekpo, the championship has demonstrated that setbacks can become stepping stones to success when athletes receive the right motivation, technical guidance and institutional support.

And with five finalists carrying Nigeria’s hopes, the determined coach believes the best is yet to come.
