Flamingos Must Fix Defensive Lapses as Puerto Rico Test Becomes Crucial

Nigeria’s Flamingos must turn the promise shown in their opening FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup performance into a more complete display when they face Puerto Rico on Tuesday, October 20, after their campaign began with a 2–1 defeat to Poland.

The Nigerian side showed resilience in Saturday’s Group B encounter in Rabat, but defensive errors and missed opportunities left them without a point. Their next fixture now presents an important opportunity to revive their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage.

Poland took the lead in the 33rd minute through Wiktoria Skrzypczak’s penalty after a video review, before Natalia Skrok doubled the advantage in the 65th minute following a defensive clearance that fell kindly for the Polish forward.

Nigeria responded through substitute Kanyinsola Yusuf, who reduced the deficit in the 79th minute. The Flamingos pushed for an equaliser but could not find a second goal before the final whistle.

The response from the bench offered encouragement, but the defeat also exposed areas coach Akeem Busari must address before the Puerto Rico encounter.

Nigeria will need greater concentration at the back, particularly when dealing with pressure in their own penalty area. They must also improve their efficiency in the final third, ensuring that promising attacking moves produce more clear-cut opportunities.

Puerto Rico will arrive at the fixture seeking its own response after a 6–0 defeat to defending champions Korea DPR in its opening match. The result leaves both teams looking for their first points in Group B.

While the scoreline against Korea DPR highlights the challenge Puerto Rico faces, Nigeria cannot afford to approach the contest on the assumption that victory will come easily. The Flamingos must maintain their discipline and impose themselves early rather than allow the match to become another recovery exercise.

With Korea DPR awaiting Nigeria in their final group fixture on Friday, October 23, Tuesday’s game carries significant weight. A positive result would strengthen the Flamingos’ position, while another defeat would leave their route to the knockout stage considerably more difficult.

For Busari’s team, the priority is clear: retain the attacking intent shown against Poland, eliminate avoidable defensive mistakes and deliver a more consistent performance across the full match.

The Flamingos have already shown they can fight back. Against Puerto Rico, they must show they can turn that fight into points.
