Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has expressed delight at contributing to Atlético Madrid’s 2-0 UEFA Champions League victory over Manchester United, insisting that helping the team succeed remains his priority regardless of whether he starts or comes off the bench.
Lookman, who was introduced as a substitute and scored Atlético’s second goal, praised his teammates for laying the foundation for the victory before his introduction.
“Yeah, no, very happy. Obviously, to come on and help the team is important,” Lookman said.
The Nigerian international explained that his approach as a substitute is to inject fresh energy into the game while contributing both defensively and offensively.
“I just bring the energy, try to help the team, you know, defensively, of course, and offensively when I get the chance to,” he stated.
Lookman credited the team’s collective performance, stressing that the efforts of the starting players made it easier for him to make an impact.
“Obviously, the guys put on a big performance before I came on, so it’s easy to come into the team and then to play,” he explained.
“Very happy with the team’s performance.”
The victory provides Atlético with a confidence boost as they prepare for their next domestic fixture, with Lookman emphasising the importance of maintaining momentum.
“Of course, we know how big of a win that is for us. It puts us into the confidence for the next game, which is on Saturday or Sunday,” he said.
Despite his goalscoring contribution, the Nigerian forward refused to place individual achievement above the collective effort, maintaining that every player has a responsibility to contribute whenever called upon.
His comments also underline his determination to make the most of his opportunities as he works towards establishing a more prominent role in the squad.
“Game after game,” Lookman concluded.
For Lookman, the goal against Manchester United represents an encouraging contribution, but his immediate focus remains on helping Atlético maintain their winning momentum.
