Young Nigerian basketball players will have another opportunity to turn their sporting abilities into educational prospects when the fifth Ajayi Elebire Elite Basketball Camp begins with a screening exercise in Lagos on October 19.
The programme returns after ten players secured scholarships during its 2025 edition, raising expectations among aspiring basketballers hoping to follow a similar path.
However, the number of scholarships available this year remains undecided, leaving participants with the challenge of impressing visiting coaches during the selection process.
Former Nigerian international Olalekan Ajayi, who founded the camp, confirmed that foreign coaches are expected to arrive in Nigeria on Monday to assess promising players from Lagos and neighbouring states.
Successful candidates from the Lagos screening will travel to Ado-Ekiti on October 20, ahead of a three-day training programme scheduled for October 21 to 23.
The camp will conclude with an All-Stars game, offering another opportunity for selected players to demonstrate their abilities.
For the young participants, the stakes extend beyond basketball development.
Scholarship opportunities could provide a pathway towards further education while allowing talented players to continue pursuing their sporting ambitions.
The programme has previously helped Nigerian basketballers secure opportunities abroad.
At its 2024 edition, five players received scholarships to study in the United States, demonstrating how grassroots basketball can create opportunities beyond local competitions.
Nevertheless, earning a place among the successful candidates will require strong performances during the screening and training sessions.
Players will have to demonstrate their technical abilities, tactical understanding and willingness to learn under the supervision of experienced coaches.
The involvement of foreign coaches could also expose participants to different training methods and expectations.
Although the organisers hope to improve on last year’s scholarship record, no confirmed number of awards has been announced for 2026.
That uncertainty makes the upcoming screening particularly important for players hoping to distinguish themselves.
As the countdown begins, attention will turn towards the young athletes seeking opportunities that could shape both their education and basketball careers.
For some, the journey towards a bigger sporting future could begin with one impressive performance in Lagos.
