United States-based healthcare professional and Chief Executive Officer of Katani Hospital, Dr. Modesta Vesonder, has inspired delegates at the Year of Return Africa (YORA) Summit & Expo 2026 with her remarkable journey of transforming personal savings into a 145-bed medical facility serving communities in Kenya.
Speaking on Wednesday at Broadwalk Mall, Westlands, Nairobi, Vesonder explained how her experience abroad motivated her to address healthcare challenges facing underserved communities in her home country.
“Katani Hospital was just an idea,” she told participants, recalling how the vision gradually developed into a fully operational healthcare institution.
According to Vesonder, the journey began around 2016 and 2017 when she returned to Kenya to research opportunities for establishing a hospital that would provide affordable and accessible medical services.
She disclosed that construction progressed gradually through earnings from her medical practice in the United States, while essential equipment, including hospital beds and X-ray machines, was sourced abroad.
The hospital currently provides inpatient and outpatient services, supported by pharmacy facilities, laboratory services and other medical infrastructure.
Beyond routine treatment, Vesonder emphasised the importance of preventive healthcare, revealing that the hospital recently organised a two-day free medical outreach programme benefiting approximately 600 patients.
The exercise included screenings for cervical cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and HIV, while previous medical missions involved visiting healthcare professionals from the United States.
“When you screen and find a disease early, you can also treat that ailment,” Vesonder explained, stressing that early diagnosis reduces treatment costs and improves healthcare outcomes.
She encouraged individuals and organisations to support community medical outreach programmes, particularly in areas where residents struggle to access affordable treatment.
Her presentation highlighted the potential of diaspora investment to strengthen Africa’s healthcare infrastructure while demonstrating how individual commitment can translate into lasting community development.
The YORA Summit continues to promote partnerships connecting African professionals abroad with investment opportunities capable of transforming lives across the continent.
