A total of ten Nigerian boxers and their accompanying officials will, from this Thursday, commence another mission for a revival of the nation’s glory days in the sport of pugilism, Sports247 reports.
The latest mission ahead of the Nigerian contingent is at the maiden African Elite Boxing Championship, which will begin this Thursday in Nairobi, Kenya and hit what is expected to be a thrilling climax on October 28th.
With a haul of medals on their mind, the Nigerian delegation is set to land in the East African host nation on Wednesday, with five female boxers and the same number of males, led by the country’s navy’s head coach and two assistants in the technical crew.
A National Sports Commission (NSC) statement disclosed that the contingent has 19 delegates, who will lend emotional, material and administrative support to the elite boxers, as they get ready to test their mettle against top opponents from across Africa.
NSC’s statement added in part, “The championship is also expected to offer the Nigerian athletes valuable international experience and a platform to demonstrate the depth of the country’s boxing talent.
“Nigeria’s participation in the inaugural championship forms part of efforts to strengthen the country’s presence in African boxing and provide its athletes with opportunities to compete at the highest level.
“The Nigerian team will compete in five male and five female weight categories – Men: 55 kg, 65kg, 70kg, 75kg, 90kg; Women: 54kg, 57kg, 65kg, 70kg, 75kg. The Nigeria Navy boxing coach will lead the team with two other coaches.”
